UV Rays can Harm the Eyes
For the month of May, we’re focusing on UV awareness. Most people are aware that UV rays can damage the skin, however many people don’t realize that UV rays are also damaging to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to too much UV rays, you may experience photokeratitis. Symptoms include: red eyes, the feeling that something is in your eyes, a gritty feeling in your eyes, excessively watery eyes and sensitivity to light. Photokeratitis is temporary and rarely causes permanent damage.
Exposure to UV rays over a long period of time can also increase the risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.
You can protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses with UV protection, which we offer at Vision Source Mustang as either prescription or non-prescription.
The American Optometric Association has more information on UV Protection and recommends a comprehensive eye exam every year to monitor eye health and maintain vision.
